
Katie Averill | Superintendent
Bio
Katie Averill was appointed by Governor Kim Reynolds to serve in the role as Superintendent of the Iowa Credit Union Division and Director of Commerce in May of 2017. Previously she held the position of Senior Vice President of Citizens Community Credit Union where she served ten years overseeing branch operations, member service, marketing and business development as well as the staff liaison for the credit union board of directors.
Superintendent Averill serves on the board of directors for the NASCUS (National Association of State Credit Union Supervisors) and is the chair of the Joint Supervision Working Group for State and federal regulation with the NCUA (National Credit Union Administration).
Katie holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Iowa State University. She is a Certified Credit Union Executive and a graduate of CUNA Management School.
She is the founder of the JOY of Reading Foundation that promotes literacy to children. She and her husband, Tim, are parents to three children and reside in Ankeny.

Jess is the Executive Officer and Attorney for the Iowa Division of Credit Unions. She has a Bachelor’s degree from University of Northern Iowa, in Political Science and minors in American Ethics, as well as Politics and Law.
Jess graduated from University of Iowa, College of Law in 2013 with Honors and received numerous academic accolades. Prior to graduation, she served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Chief Judge Thomas N. Bower of Iowa’s Judicial District 1 (currently Chief Judge of the Iowa Court of Appeals). Upon graduation, she served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Chief Judge John A. Jarvey of the Federal District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. Prior to accepting a position with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions, she was an associate attorney for a private practice defense firm focusing on civil litigation, employment law, and workers compensation.
Jess was admitted to the Iowa Bar in 2013 and the Illinois Bar in 2016. She has been with the Division since January 2018 and serves as the Financial Manager and Legislative Liaison for the Division. She is a NAFCU Certified Compliance Officer and is highly trained. In her role with the Division, Jess serves as legal counsel, drafts official Guidance documents and Interpretive Bulletins, addresses novel legal concerns, reviews applications, addresses all complaints, and rules and code changes in addition to a plethora of other responsibilities.

As the Director of Examinations, Kevin has over 20 years of experience with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions. Kevin moved into his role as Director in 2017 and is in charge of directing the examination schedule, allocating resources and overseeing the field examination staff.
Prior to accepting a position with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions, he worked in the accounting/finance field in the Waterloo area.
In 1999 Kevin joined the Division as a field examiner, and in 2006 he was promoted to Senior Examiner with an emphasis in regulatory compliance. Kevin is a graduate of Loras College with a major in Finance. He enjoys attending live sporting events, particularly for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. Kevin also enjoys traveling with his wife and family.

As an Analyst Examiner, Isaac has less than 5 years of experience with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions.
While his primary focus is conducting financial analysis of Iowa credit unions, Isaac also assists in various area such as examinations, research, mergers and budget analysis. Prior to accepting a position with the Iowa Division of Credit Union, Isaac worked at U.S. Bank as a structured finance analyst in Chicago. He also worked as a personal banker at BMO Harris Bank, and as a teller at Hills Bank.
Isaac obtained a B.B.A. in finance from the University of Iowa in 2013 and is currently working toward a master’s degree from Drake University. Though Isaac spends much of his time studying, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, watching sports, listening to jazz, reading, riding his bicycle and watching episodes of Seinfeld.

As the Information Technology Specialist, Amanda has over 20 years of experience with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions.
Her primary focus is managing the technological pieces needed for the Division staff to complete their job duties and aid in reviewing credit union information systems as needed.
Amanda attended the University of Northern Iowa with a major in accounting. Prior to becoming the Information Technology Specialist, she started her career with the Division as an Examiner. While in an Examiner role, Amanda assisted technology staff with special projects and found that she enjoyed this work. In 2006 she left her role as an Examiner to work on IT projects and assisted in handling the Information Technology assets of the Division.
She enjoys Zumba workouts, working on craft projects, growing a small business, and spending time with her two children, family and friends.

As the Division Administrator, Sara has over 15 years of experience with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions.
In this role, she serves as the center of communication and organization for the Division. Sara supports all administrative needs of the Superintendent and the Division staff.
Sara graduated from North Iowa Area Community College and continued her studies with a focus on Human Resources at Iowa State University and Upper Iowa University.
She enjoys spending time with her family, boating, traveling and new adventures.

As a Senior Credit Union Examiner, Craig has over 20 years of experience with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions.
While his primary focus targets examinations of credit unions with a larger asset size, Craig also performs reviews and oversight of credit unions with commercial lending programs. Craig has attended numerous training classes hosted by the NCUA and the FFIEC, therefore he provides training to other Iowa Division of Credit Unions Examiners.
Craig is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, class of 1984! He enjoys rooting for most of the Chicago area professional sports teams and is a big Hawkeye and Panthers fan. Craig loves to work with his hands and enjoys cooking and tinkering on cars.

As a Senior Credit Union Examiner, Chris has over 20 years of experience with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions.
While his primary focus is Capital Markets, he has served as a Problem Case Officer. Chris has attended numerous training classes hosted by the NCUA and the FFIEC.
Chris is a graduate of Northern Iowa. Go Panthers! He enjoys coaching volleyball and golfing.

As a Senior Credit Union Examiner, Jackson has over 5 years of experience with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions.
Jackson performs reviews and assists in oversight of credit unions with commercial lending programs. Jackson has attended numerous training classes hosted by the NCUA and the FFIEC.
Jackson holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in finance from the University of Iowa. He enjoys outdoor hobbies such as running, biking, and disc golf.

As a Credit Union Examiner, Casey has over 5 years of experience with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions.
He focuses on the role of regulation and assisting credit unions, while monitoring levels of risk through quarterly call reports and annual risk-focused exams.
Casey holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from The University of Iowa. Prior to accepting a position with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions, he worked at Wells Fargo.
He enjoys spending time with his family and friends, as well as fishing and golfing.

As a Technology Examiner, Danielle has less than 5 years of experience with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions.
Her primary focus is to review challenges and difficulties faced by the Division regarding technology to implement and oversee the use of tools and applications to alleviate the same. She carries with her the knowledge to assist or oversee the examination process in credit unions within the state of Iowa. Danielle’s areas of emphasis include information security, technology and lending, to include lending for hemp and marijuana related businesses.
Danielle holds a B.A. in Accounting and Business Administration with a concentration in finance from Grand View University. She has worked for the State of Iowa for over 5 years. Prior to accepting a position with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions, she worked for the Iowa Department of Revenue as an examiner and auditor specializing in sales/use tax and criminal investigative audit.
She is a proud mother of two boys and can usually be found with them when not at work. She considers herself an amateur photographer and loves to travel.

As a Credit Union Examiner, Eric has under 5 year of experience with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions.
He focuses on the role of regulation and assisting credit unions, while monitoring levels of risk through quarterly call reports and annual risk-focused exams.
Eric holds a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Investments from The University of Northern Iowa. Prior to accepting a position with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions, he worked in the construction industry.
He enjoys spending time on his grandparent’s farm and being outdoors.

As a Credit Union Examiner, Jessica has under 5 year of experience with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions.
She focuses on the role of regulation and assisting credit unions, while monitoring levels of risk through quarterly call reports and annual risk-focused exams.
Jessica holds a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from The University of Northern Iowa. Prior to accepting a position with the Iowa Division of Credit Unions, she worked in the community
banking industry.
Outside of work Jessica can often be found at her local gym teaching a kickboxing class, bowling, or spending time with family & friends.

Colin has less than 5 years experience as a credit union examiner for the Iowa Division of Credit Unions.
Colin graduated from Iowa State University in 2019 with a degree in Agricultural Business & Economics. Prior to that his experience has been focused in the financial sector where his roles involved a mix of insurance and banking work. His area of focus was in operational risk and credit analysis.
A few things he enjoys in his spare time are rooting on the Cyclones, biking on the trails in Des Moines and exploring new restaurants and breweries along the way.
